Olive Smith interviews for Stanford’s biology Ph.D. program. After the interview, she goes into a bathroom because her expired contact lenses are bothering her and she cannot see properly. While she is trying to fix them, she meets a man she assumes is another graduate student. They talk, and Olive tells him about her interest in researching pancreatic cancer and why she wants to pursue a Ph.D. She does not learn his name, but the conversation stays with her, because he told her she could do anything if she put her mind to it. A few weeks later, she is accepted into Stanford’s program.

Three years later, Olive is a third-year biology Ph.D. candidate working in Dr. Aysegul Aslan’s lab. Her research focuses on finding biomarkers that could make pancreatic cancer easier and earlier to diagnose. Her mother died from pancreatic cancer when Olive was fifteen, after being diagnosed too late, and Olive’s research is partly motivated by that experience. Olive has also been largely on her own since childhood. Her father was absent, her grandparents were dead, and she entered the foster system after her mother’s death before eventually becoming emancipated at sixteen. Her closest friends are Anh Pham, her best friend and fellow scientist, and Malcolm, her roommate.

The immediate problem begins with Olive’s former boyfriend, Jeremy. Olive and Jeremy broke up, but Anh has developed feelings for him. Anh is reluctant to pursue Jeremy because she believes it would hurt Olive. Olive wants Anh to know that she is completely over Jeremy, so she lies and tells Anh that she is already seeing someone else. When Anh unexpectedly comes to the lab and wants proof that Olive is on a date, Olive panics and grabs the first man she sees, kissing him. The man turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a 34-year-old tenured Stanford professor with a reputation for being intimidating, brutally critical, and difficult to work with. Olive is horrified when she realizes who she has kissed. Adam is equally confused by the situation, but after Olive explains the lie, he agrees to help maintain the appearance that they are dating.

Adam has a reason for agreeing. Stanford has become concerned that he may leave the university because he has received a large research grant connected to work with another institution. The university has consequently frozen some of his research funding. Adam believes that if people think he is establishing personal ties at Stanford, the administration will be less likely to assume that he plans to leave. His fake relationship with Olive can therefore benefit both of them: Olive can convince Anh that she has moved on from Jeremy, while Adam can make Stanford believe he intends to stay.

Olive and Adam establish rules for their arrangement. They will pretend to date publicly, particularly around campus, but will not become romantically involved. Olive specifically establishes that there will be no sex. They also agree not to date other people while they are maintaining the appearance of being together because doing so would make the situation unnecessarily complicated. They plan regular coffee dates so their relationship will look convincing and agree to continue the arrangement until after Stanford’s upcoming budget review. Adam also cannot supervise Olive, serve on her thesis committee, or participate in decisions concerning her fellowships or awards, so their relationship does not directly interfere with her academic position.

Their first fake dates are awkward but gradually become more natural. Olive discovers that being publicly associated with Adam changes how other people treat her. At the same time, Adam’s reputation becomes clearer to her. He is extremely demanding of his students and has little patience for poor research, but Olive begins to recognize that his harshness is directed toward their work rather than intended to humiliate them personally. Malcolm dislikes Adam because Adam has previously criticized Malcolm’s scientific work, but Olive begins to see a difference between Adam’s reputation and the person she actually encounters.

Olive also needs additional laboratory space for her pancreatic cancer research. She begins communicating with Dr. Tom Benton, a well-known Harvard cancer researcher who may allow her to work in his lab. Tom eventually visits Stanford, where Olive discovers that he and Adam already know each other. They were graduate-school colleagues and have obtained a major research grant together. Tom asks Olive to prepare a detailed report on her research before deciding whether to give her laboratory space and funding. Olive agrees. She also learns that she will have to keep any possible Harvard opportunity quiet because Adam’s fake relationship is partly intended to convince Stanford that he plans to stay; if people learn that Olive might be moving to Harvard, it could undermine the arrangement.

As Olive and Adam continue pretending to date, their attraction becomes increasingly difficult for Olive to ignore. At a department picnic, she sees Adam playing Ultimate Frisbee without a shirt and realizes how physically attracted she is to him. Later, she rubs sunscreen onto his back while their colleagues watch. Their interactions become increasingly intimate, although Olive continues insisting to herself that the relationship is fake. She also begins learning more about Adam’s personal life.

One night, Olive tells Adam about her mother’s death and her childhood. Adam listens and offers her practical help with her research, including access to equipment in his laboratory and advice about an experiment she is having trouble with. Olive becomes increasingly curious about why someone like Adam is single. She eventually realizes that she is developing genuine feelings for him. Malcolm encourages her to admit those feelings, but Olive refuses because she is afraid that Adam does not feel the same way. She has already experienced the loss of nearly everyone she depended on, and she worries that risking her friendship with Adam would mean losing another person she cares about.

There is also a second mystery involving Adam. Olive remembers the unidentified man she met in the Stanford bathroom three years earlier and occasionally wonders about him. During a conversation with Adam, he says something that the man from the bathroom had said to her years earlier. Olive realizes that Adam was the man she met during her Stanford interview. She is shocked that the person she has been fake-dating is also the person she had remembered for years without knowing his identity.

At the same time, Olive becomes convinced that Adam may be interested in someone else. Adam has apparently talked about wanting to ask someone out for years, and his friend Dr. Holden Rodriguez refers to the woman indirectly. Olive assumes the person must be someone other than her because she and Adam have only been pretending to date for a short time. When Adam overhears Olive telling Malcolm that she has fallen for someone, Olive panics and tells Adam that she is talking about a different man. Adam believes her and later encourages her to tell the supposed mystery man how she feels. He does not realize that Olive is actually talking about him.

Olive’s research is eventually selected for an oral presentation at the Society for Biological Discovery conference in Boston. This is a significant opportunity because graduate students are rarely selected to present alongside faculty. Olive is nervous about public speaking, so Dr. Aslan helps her prepare. Adam also offers to review her presentation and helps her refine it. Their relationship becomes more comfortable, and Olive increasingly feels that Adam is someone who supports her professionally rather than someone who merely happens to be playing her boyfriend.

Olive travels to Boston for the conference and discovers that her hotel situation is complicated because accommodations are difficult to find. Adam offers to let her share his hotel room because he has a room for the entire conference but will only be using it for part of the time. Olive accepts. Adam has his own keynote presentation, while Olive is scheduled to present her research on the same day. Her presentation goes well, with Anh and Malcolm there to support her. Tom Benton is also part of the conference panel.

After Olive’s presentation, Tom approaches her when they are alone. He begins making unwanted sexual advances toward her and attempts to kiss her. Olive pushes him away. Tom then insults her, suggesting that she is willing to sleep with people to advance her career. He tells her that he knows about her relationship with Adam and claims that her research presentation was accepted because of Adam’s influence. He also tells her that he was only going to offer her the Harvard position because of Adam. When Olive threatens to tell Adam what happened, Tom tells her that Adam will not believe her over him and threatens to deny everything. He also tells her that if she refuses the Harvard position, he can reproduce her research because he already knows enough about it.

Olive is devastated but does not tell Adam the truth. When Adam returns to their hotel room, he immediately notices that something is wrong. Olive lies and says she is upset because she overheard someone suggesting that her research was mediocre and that she only received the conference opportunity because of Adam. Adam tries to reassure her. He explains that the conference abstracts were evaluated through a blind-review process, meaning Adam could not have influenced the decision to select her. He also tells Olive about his own former academic advisor, who had been abusive and had once convinced Adam that he would never amount to anything. Adam explains that he eventually realized that his advisor’s behavior was abusive and that his own demanding approach to students is intended to improve their work rather than destroy their confidence.

Olive and Adam spend the evening together away from the conference events. They eat dinner, return to the hotel, and talk about their lives. Olive eventually initiates a kiss. Adam initially stops her because he knows she is upset and because she has previously claimed to be interested in another man. He does not want their first sexual encounter to happen when she might be acting from distress or confusion. Olive reassures him that she wants him, and they have sex.

Afterward, they continue talking. Adam tells Olive more about his childhood and explains that he learned Dutch as a child. He was raised largely by au pairs because his parents were frequently busy. He also tells her that he is considering a position at Harvard. He believes the opportunity would allow him to work more closely with Tom and make their research collaboration more productive. Olive realizes that Adam may soon leave Stanford, but she does not yet tell him about Tom’s harassment.

The next day, Olive learns that Adam’s research funding has been released. Instead of feeling relieved about their arrangement, she becomes increasingly worried about Tom. She believes that if she tells Adam what happened, she could damage his research collaboration and his potential move to Harvard. She also believes that no one will believe her against a respected professor like Tom. Because she thinks she can protect Adam by removing herself from the situation, Olive breaks up with him. She does not explain the real reason. Adam is confused and hurt, and Olive leaves despite the fact that they still clearly have feelings for each other.

After the breakup, Olive decides she will not go to Harvard after all. She asks Dr. Aslan to contact other cancer researchers on her behalf and look for alternative laboratory opportunities. While working on the recording of her conference presentation, Olive realizes that she accidentally recorded the conversation she had with Tom after her presentation. She listens to it and discovers that the entire encounter with Tom was captured.

Malcolm and Anh listen to the recording with her and immediately recognize that it documents Tom’s harassment and threats. Olive is still reluctant to involve Adam because she knows how important the collaboration with Tom is to him. They contact Holden Rodriguez for advice. Holden reveals that he has never trusted Tom. He explains that Tom and Adam had a complicated relationship during graduate school, with Tom sometimes appearing to undermine Adam while also defending him. Holden believes Tom benefits from Adam’s loyalty and that the research collaboration may be more beneficial to Tom than to Adam. Holden also believes Adam's interest in Harvard may have less to do with Tom or the research and more to do with Olive potentially being there.

Olive finally decides that Adam needs to know what happened. She tracks him down at a dinner involving Harvard faculty, including Tom. When Adam sees Olive, he immediately leaves the table to speak with her. Olive plays the recording. Adam listens as Tom harasses Olive, insults her, threatens her, and tells her that he can damage her research career. Adam becomes furious and confronts Tom. He initially threatens to physically attack him, but Olive stops him and tells him that Tom is not worth it. Adam then tells Olive to send him the recording and begins dealing with the Harvard faculty about what happened.

The consequences move quickly. Tom is dismissed from Harvard, and disciplinary action is taken against him. Olive does not lose her research career as she feared. Instead, several cancer researchers respond positively to her work after Dr. Aslan contacts them. She receives multiple potential opportunities based on her own research rather than through Tom.

Adam returns to Stanford, and Holden arranges a double date involving himself, Malcolm, Olive, and Adam. During the dinner, Malcolm and Adam finally address their history. Adam explains that his criticism of Malcolm’s research was not personal. Holden also accidentally reveals something important: Adam has been interested in Olive for years.

Olive initially assumes Holden is mistaken because she and Adam have only been together for a few weeks. Holden explains that Adam has known Olive since the Stanford interview three years earlier. Olive realizes that Adam remembered her from the bathroom encounter just as she remembered him. The man she had wondered about for three years was Adam all along. His interest in her did not begin with the fake relationship.

After the dinner, Olive and Adam go home together. Adam tells her that Harvard is going to fire Tom and that additional disciplinary consequences will follow. Olive admits that she also remembered the man from the bathroom and explains that she eventually realized Adam was him but did not tell him immediately. She then tells Adam that she loves him, using the Dutch she has learned from him.

The epilogue takes place ten months later, on the anniversary of Olive and Adam’s first kiss. They return to the lab and recreate the kiss at the same time of day as the original one.
