The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

Here is a summary with spoilers for The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

In 2056, 19-year-old Paige Mahoney lives in Scion London, a dystopian city where clairvoyance is illegal and punishable by death. Paige works in the criminal clairvoyant underworld known as the Syndicate, serving as a mollisher—an apprentice—to the powerful mime-lord Jaxon Hall. As a dreamwalker, Paige can enter the aether and track spirits or other voyants’ minds, making her valuable to the Syndicate. While traveling home to visit her father, she is confronted by government Underguards attempting to arrest another voyant on her train. In a desperate act of self-defense, Paige psychically attacks them, killing one and shattering the other’s sanity before escaping.

Knowing the government will hunt her, Paige prepares to flee, but she is captured by a government collection unit after a rooftop chase. Instead of execution, she is transported to a secret prison city hidden in Oxford. There she learns that the Scion government secretly delivers captured clairvoyants to an ancient alien race called the Rephaim. The Rephaim claim to protect humanity from monstrous creatures called Emim, but they actually enslave voyants and feed on their supernatural abilities. Their ruler, Nashira Sargas, announces the beginning of the “Bone Season,” a decadal period in which selected voyants are trained as soldiers called red-jackets.

Each captured voyant is assigned to a Rephaite “keeper.” Paige is claimed by Arcturus Mesarthim, known to her only as Warden. He takes her to his residence in the tower of Magdalen and forces her into a rigid routine of nighttime training, mandatory drugs, and strict obedience. Paige quickly realizes she is unusual: Warden has never kept a human voyant before, and she is secretly being given a mysterious third medication. While exploring the city during the day, Paige learns from other captives that Nashira desperately wants to control dreamwalkers like her because their ability to enter spirits’ dreamscapes is extremely rare.

Paige befriends several other prisoners, including the performer Liss Rymore, the seer Julian, and an abused servant boy named Seb. She discovers that the Rephaim test voyants twice—first to prove their abilities and then their loyalty. During Paige’s first test, Nashira orders her to kill Seb to demonstrate obedience. Paige refuses and attacks a Rephaite instead, revealing her dreamwalking powers in the struggle. Nashira kills Seb herself but considers Paige’s power valuable enough to keep. Paige survives poisoning and officially passes the first test, earning a pink uniform that marks her as a trainee red-jacket.

While recovering, Paige begins secretly investigating the Rephaim and their weaknesses. She learns that the Rephaim feed on human auras and that many failed voyants are reduced to entertainers or slowly drained of their power. She also hears rumors of a previous rebellion that ended in mass death. Meanwhile, Warden begins personally training Paige in combat and psychic defense. Their relationship remains tense—Paige distrusts him as her captor, but she notices he treats her differently from other Rephaim and sometimes protects her from harsher punishments.

As Paige continues training, she meets another rebellious voyant named David, who reveals that Nashira is actively hunting powerful mime-lords from the Syndicate because she fears they could threaten her control. He also describes how previous trainees were forced to fight Emim monsters outside the city walls. Realizing that Oxford is built on lies and exploitation, Paige becomes determined to escape and expose the truth about the Rephaim. When she returns to her tower one night, she finds her room ransacked and Rephaite blood on the floor, suggesting that conflict within the Rephaim—and perhaps the beginnings of another rebellion—may already be underway.

Paige begins the sequence by tending to Warden, who lies gravely wounded from an Emim attack. He asks her to let him die, but when she realizes the severity of his injuries, she uses saltwater to clean and treat his torn shoulder. Warden requests a pint of her blood to heal him, promising her a favor in return. After she bleeds into his mouth, he recovers, and Pleione delivers a vial of Seb’s blood, showing that Warden is secretly aided by the Rephaim while keeping certain truths from Paige. This scene underscores the growing complexity of their alliance and Paige’s reluctant trust in him.

The narrative flashes back to Paige’s school years in Dublin, where she meets Nick, a fellow voyant. Over several encounters, Nick teaches her about her powers and introduces her to Jaxon Hall, who explains the Syndicate, the aether, and Scion’s anti-voyant propaganda. Jaxon identifies Paige as one of the rarest modern clairvoyants and offers her a permanent role within the Syndicate. These formative experiences establish her abilities, her early alliances, and the stakes of being a highly skilled voyant in a world that hunts her kind.

Back in Oxford, Paige secures a small sanctuary and examines the envelope David gave her, containing Rephaim intelligence. She realizes Pleione is complicit in Warden’s secret and drifts off to sleep, only to be awakened by Liss warning her of missed curfew and red-jackets searching for her. During a fight in Liss’s shack, red-jackets destroy Liss’s tarot deck, severing her connection to the aether and rendering her catatonic. Paige is captured by Suhail but protected by Warden, who reinforces the importance of curfew and negotiates a temporary survival bargain: Paige must spend an hour each night in conversation with him while he maintains control over her training and safety.

Warden trains Paige in rhabdomancy and teaches her to open portals between worlds using blood, pushing her to confront the limits of her sanity. Through these exercises, Paige demonstrates growth in skill but also endures extreme physical and psychic strain. A flashback reveals her early exposure to Scion oppression in Ireland, including a protest where her cousin Finn is arrested, establishing her personal stakes against Scion. In the present, Paige navigates a hazardous forest filled with guards, Emim, and land mines to find her way back to Magdalen. She survives multiple Emim attacks, uses her dreamwalking ability to possess another being, and returns to Warden’s care, demonstrating both cunning and her growing mastery of her powers.

Paige continues to consolidate her position within the Rephaim hierarchy while secretly preparing for rebellion. Warden explains Nashira’s ability to bind spirits from voyants she has killed, revealing the stakes and dangers Paige faces. She helps Liss recover from spirit shock with a blood ritual and new tarot deck. Paige also begins collaborating with Julian and other voyants to plan a broader uprising, speculating on Warden’s past as a possible participant in previous human rebellions. Nashira, unaware of Paige’s possession abilities, promotes her to red-jacket status and assigns her the task of finding Antoinette Carter and the Seven Seals, threatening exile if she fails.

Paige’s flashbacks with Jaxon’s Syndicate team further contextualize her expertise and relationships, including her encounters with Zeke and Nadine, and the mentorship of Jaxon. These memories emphasize her unique abilities and hint at emotional entanglements that influence her decisions. In the present, Paige is warned by Warden about Situla Mesarthim, a Reph accompanying the red-jackets on their mission. She dons armored gear and is blindfolded with other red-jackets, transported to London to intercept the Syndicate. When the blindfolds are removed, Paige and the rebels engage in a spirit battle with Syndicate members, including Jaxon, David, and Nadine, resulting in multiple possessions and confrontations, including Paige possessing David to prevent him from killing Nadine.

The battle escalates as Paige pursues Carter and engages Nashira. She is shot while escaping but is rescued by Nick and Warden, though she is demoted to yellow-jacket status. Warden reveals that their repeated rescues of each other have created a “golden cord,” a psychic link allowing them to summon one another. Paige enters Warden’s dreamscape, only to find he can fabricate illusions and has been observing her memories, unsettling her. She receives instructions from Warden to collect supplies from a location called “the House,” where she discovers a train station suitable for evacuating Sheol I’s prisoners. Paige survives confrontations with Rephaim guards, including killing a blood-heir with red aster pollen, and returns safely to Warden.

Paige and Warden plan a rebellion timed with the Bicentenary, ensuring voyants are evacuated and red-jackets are neutralized with spiked wine. At the Guildhall, Paige confronts Scion emissaries about her cousin Finn and navigates complex political and psychic threats from Nashira. During the stage execution, Paige possesses Nashira, forcing her to drive a knife into herself, triggering a chaotic spirit battle. Warden and allied Reph intervene, allowing Paige to escape the stage. Following the battle, she reunites with Nick, Jaxon, and other voyants, but Liss is mortally wounded. The city erupts into chaos as the Emim are unleashed. Paige signals other voyants with a flare, facilitating evacuation. She boards the train with survivors, leaving Warden behind to confront Nashira, completing a climactic sequence of revolt, escape, and consolidation of her powers.
