The revelations completely shatter Violet’s understanding of the world and deeply damage her trust in Xaden, who admits he kept the truth from her to protect both her and the rebellion. Brennan and Xaden continue withholding details until Violet can strengthen her mental shields against Dain Aetos, whose signet allows him to read recent memories through touch. Violet refuses to fully reconcile with Xaden until he promises to stop hiding things from her.

Violet returns to Basgiath for her second year while Xaden graduates and is stationed at Samara, a border outpost constantly under venin threat. Their dragons’ mating bond allows them limited visits with one another, but distance and secrecy continue straining their relationship. Meanwhile, Andarna enters the Dreamless Sleep, a dangerous maturation period for young dragons, leaving Violet vulnerable without one of her bonded dragons. Major Burton Varrish replaces Colonel Aetos as vice commandant and immediately targets Violet, punishing her whenever Andarna fails to appear for drills despite Violet having no control over the situation. Varrish repeatedly pushes Violet to physical exhaustion by forcing her to wield her lightning signet over and over, nearly burning her out. His obsession with controlling and breaking Violet becomes one of the greatest threats she faces at Basgiath. At the same time, Colonel Aetos secretly begins eliminating survivors of Athebyne to keep the truth about the venin hidden.

As the year progresses, Violet becomes increasingly isolated from her friends because she cannot tell them the truth about Athebyne, the rebellion, or the venin. She turns instead to Jesinia, her scribe friend, to help research the history of the First Six and the creation of the wards. Violet believes the answers to defeating the venin are hidden in the Archives, though possessing or researching forbidden texts could get her executed. During this time, Prince Cam secretly joins the Riders Quadrant under the alias Aaric Graycastle. Unlike his father, King Tauri, Aaric already knows the truth about the venin and wants to fight them rather than continue Navarre’s lies. Violet also struggles through the Rider Survival Course, where second years are subjected to brutal exercises designed to test survival without dragons or signets. During a joint land navigation exercise with infantry, healers, and scribes, Violet and her squad are drugged with signet-blocking elixir and separated from their dragons. The mission becomes deadly and exposes how vulnerable riders truly are without their bonds.

Violet’s relationship with Xaden continues to fluctuate between love, anger, and mistrust. Xaden expects her to trust him while still refusing to reveal everything about the rebellion. Their arguments force Violet to confront how much secrecy exists between them. Complicating matters further is Catriona Cordella, known as Cat, Xaden’s former lover and political betrothed. Cat possesses mindwork abilities that intensify Violet’s insecurities, jealousy, and anger, often pushing Violet dangerously close to losing control of her lightning signet. Violet realizes her inability to control her emotions directly impacts the instability of her power. Despite this, she slowly learns to center herself with guidance from Felix, an Assembly member in Aretia who teaches her how to properly wield lightning instead of allowing it to consume her. At the same time, riders and gryphon fliers begin training together despite generations of hatred and mistrust. Violet becomes a central figure in building unity between them, understanding that defeating the venin will require both sides to work together.

The rebellion’s efforts intensify when Violet and her friends devise a plan to infiltrate the Archives and steal the journals of the First Six. They believe the journals contain the missing information needed to restore and strengthen the wards. Violet, Rhiannon, Ridoc, Sawyer, and the others successfully break into the hidden vault and recover the journals of Warrick and Lyra. However, Nolon catches Violet with Lyra’s journal and turns her over to Varrish. Violet is imprisoned and brutally tortured for days as Varrish attempts to force information from her about the rebellion and Aretia. He even brings in Dain to use his signet against her. During the torture, Violet survives largely through sheer resilience and visions of Liam Mairi encouraging her not to give up. When Dain finally sees the truth in Violet’s memories and realizes the extent of the corruption at Basgiath, he kills Varrish and helps Violet escape alongside Xaden. On her way out, Violet’s mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, reveals that she never knew Violet was being tortured and admits that many of her harsh choices were made to protect her children. She also reveals she once made a deal with Xaden that required him to help Violet survive Basgiath.

After escaping, Violet and Xaden expose the truth about the venin to the students of Basgiath and offer any cadets willing to desert the chance to join them in Aretia. More than two hundred riders and dragons leave with them, officially transforming the rebellion into an organized military force and makeshift war college. In Aretia, Violet continues translating Warrick’s journal and attempts to raise the wards surrounding the city, but her first attempt fails. She later travels with Brennan and Mira to Cordyn in order to negotiate with Viscount Tecarus for a luminary capable of powering Aretia’s forges so they can make more alloy daggers against the venin. There, Violet discovers Cat is Tecarus’s niece and that Cat and Xaden were once politically arranged to marry. Violet eventually kills a venin with her lightning to secure the alliance, though Tecarus demands that one hundred gryphon fliers be allowed to train alongside the riders in return.

Over the following weeks, riders and fliers begin learning to trust one another while also studying Tyrrish runes capable of storing magic. During a mission in the Esben Mountains, Violet’s group is attacked by Solas, the dragon bonded to Varrish. One rider dies during the attack, but Andarna kills Solas to protect Violet and the others, an act considered shocking among dragons. Violet and Cat slowly move past their rivalry and begin working together for the greater war effort. Violet also continues retranslating Warrick’s journal with Dain’s assistance, eventually discovering critical errors in the translation. The corrected information reveals that the wards require dragon fire from all seven dragon dens, not six as originally believed. Violet also learns that Xaden possesses a second forbidden signet that allows him to read people’s intentions before they act, a secret he hid because second signets are illegal and punishable by death.

As the venin gather near Samara, General Melgren predicts the outpost will fall and requests aid from Aretia. Brennan refuses, believing the attack is a distraction meant to leave Basgiath vulnerable. Violet eventually realizes he is right and that someone inside Basgiath plans to sabotage the wards. She returns to Basgiath with her allies despite the Assembly warning against it. Upon arrival, Jack Barlowe is revealed to have survived and secretly become venin. He destroys the wardstone, causing the wards protecting Navarre to fail. Massive hordes of wyvern and venin descend on Basgiath while most of Navarre’s military remains trapped fighting elsewhere. Violet and her squad are tasked with defending the wardstone while Brennan attempts to repair it. During the battle, Violet unleashes devastating lightning strikes against the enemy while riders and dragons fall around her. Sawyer loses a leg to a wyvern attack, and Violet is nearly overwhelmed by venin before Andarna breathes fire for the first time to save her.

In the middle of the battle, Jesinia arrives with the completed translation of Lyra’s journal, revealing the final piece of the ward ritual. Violet discovers that Andarna belongs to a secret seventh dragon den known as the Feathertails and that all seven dens are required to restore the wards fully. Violet gathers dragons from each den and begins channeling power into the wardstone, but the process begins draining her life force. Realizing Violet will die before completing the ritual, General Lilith Sorrengail sacrifices herself by channeling her own life into the wardstone through Sloane’s siphoning abilities. Her sacrifice activates the wards, causing the attacking wyvern to fall from the sky and weakening the venin forces. Violet is devastated by her mother’s death, especially after finally understanding that Lilith had always been trying to protect her children in the only way she knew how.

At the same time, Xaden confronts the venin Sage who has haunted his dreams throughout the novel. Desperate to save Violet and stop the Sage, Xaden makes the catastrophic decision to draw power directly from the earth. In doing so, he becomes tainted by venin magic himself. Although the battle at Basgiath ends in victory and the wards are restored, the final revelation changes everything. Xaden is now marked by the same darkness they have been fighting against, leaving Violet and the others facing an even more terrifying future. The war against the venin is far from over, and the cost of survival continues to grow.
