Here is a summary with spoilers for Wings of Starlight by Allison Saft

The Never Fairies are responsible for maintaining the natural balance of the world through the changing seasons. Their home, Pixie Hollow, is divided into four seasonal realms surrounding the Pixie Dust Tree: Spring Valley, Summer Glade, Autumn Forest, and the isolated Winter Woods. Warm-season fairies are forbidden from entering Winter because the cold can shatter their wings, while Winter fairies risk injury if they remain too long in warmth. Though most fairies view Winter as distant and dangerous, a far older threat lies hidden beneath a frozen lake deep within the Winter Woods. One moonless night, Milori, the Warden of Winter, witnesses cracks forming beneath the ice as creatures made of shadow and nightmare begin escaping their prison. These creatures, called Nightmares, slowly move toward the warm realms, threatening the balance of all Pixie Hollow.

At the center of the story is Clarion, heir to the throne of Pixie Hollow and the next governing-talent queen. Clarion was born from a falling star and possesses powerful starlight magic in her wings, but she struggles to control it. Raised by Queen Elvina, Clarion has spent most of her life isolated from ordinary fairies because Elvina believes rulers must remain emotionally distant and focused on the greater good. Clarion secretly hates this isolation and longs to connect with the fairies she will one day rule. During a visit to Summer Glade, she helps a struggling bee despite Elvina warning her not to become attached to individual problems. The moment reminds Clarion how disconnected she feels from the rest of Pixie Hollow. Her fears about becoming queen grow worse when she fails a governing-magic test and cannot summon the light expected of her.

As Clarion begins attending council meetings with the seasonal ministers, news arrives that a monster has crossed from Winter into Spring. Panic spreads across Pixie Hollow as Queen Elvina orders lockdowns and immediately proposes isolating Winter completely. Clarion disagrees with the response and becomes increasingly curious about what is truly happening beyond the border. Defying orders, she secretly travels to the edge of Winter, where she meets Milori. Though cautious around each other at first, Clarion quickly realizes Milori is not the monster she was taught to fear. He explains that the creatures escaping from the frozen lake are ancient Nightmares, beings born from dark dreams that can trap fairies inside endless magical sleep. Their meeting sparks both mutual respect and growing curiosity, and they begin secretly meeting at the border to investigate the attacks together.

Clarion soon witnesses the Nightmares herself when a serpent-like creature made of smoke and violet light attacks fairies in Autumn Forest. While trying to protect them, Clarion’s starlight magic finally awakens, blasting the creature with golden light and forcing it to retreat. However, several fairies, including Minister Rowan, fall into unnatural sleep after exposure to the Nightmare venom. Elvina finally admits the truth about the Nightmares and reveals they were imprisoned centuries earlier beneath the frozen lake in Winter. Rather than work with Winter to stop the creatures, Elvina focuses on containment and secretly plans to sever the magical bridges connecting Winter to the warm seasons forever. Clarion believes this plan would abandon innocent Winter fairies and doom Pixie Hollow to further division.

Determined to find another solution, Clarion turns to her closest friends. Petra, an inventive tinker fairy, creates a massive protective coat, snowshoes, mittens, and boots so Clarion can safely survive the deadly cold of Winter. Clarion travels with Milori through the Winter Woods and experiences its beauty for the first time. Milori takes her across frozen forests and snowy mountains to the Hall of Winter, where they meet the Keeper of Fairy Knowledge and his wolf companion Fenris. Inside the Hall, Clarion unlocks an ancient magical book using her governing magic. The book reveals the forgotten history of the dream-talent fairies, who once gathered dreams and protected the Pixie Dust Tree. The Nightmares were dark remnants of those dreams eventually imprisoned beneath the frozen lake. When the dream talents disappeared, the barrier slowly weakened. The Keeper believes Clarion’s starlight magic carries remnants of dream-talent power capable of repairing the prison.

Clarion and Milori attempt to restore the barrier beneath the frozen lake together. During their first attempt, Clarion briefly strengthens the prison, but a Nightmare breaks through in the form of a many-eyed raven and attacks her. Though Milori and his snowy owl Noctua help save her, Clarion is badly shaken by the experience. As they continue working together, Clarion begins to understand Milori more deeply. She sees how much he cares for the Winter fairies and how heavily the responsibility of protecting Winter weighs on him. Their growing friendship slowly becomes romantic as Clarion realizes her emotions strengthen her magic rather than weaken it. Milori encourages her to stop suppressing her compassion, directly contradicting everything Elvina taught her about leadership.

Meanwhile, tensions continue rising across Pixie Hollow. Elvina secretly commissions Petra to create a magical blade powered by sunstone and starlight that can permanently sever Winter from the warm seasons. Petra quietly sabotages the weapon because she agrees with Clarion that isolation will not solve the crisis. Clarion becomes increasingly torn between her responsibilities as future queen and her feelings for Milori, especially because crossing between the realms can permanently injure Winter fairies. During one of their meetings at the border, Clarion and Milori share their first kiss, and Clarion’s starlight magic surges stronger than ever before. Together they make another attempt to repair the prison beneath the lake. This time Clarion stops trying to control her emotions and allows the magic to flow naturally through her. The barrier is restored temporarily, trapping the Nightmares once more, but the fairies already cursed by Nightmare venom remain asleep.

As Clarion’s coronation approaches, she struggles with growing guilt and uncertainty. During the official celebrations in the warm realms, she argues with Petra about her secret meetings with Milori and leaves the festivities for Winter instead. In the Winter Woods she is welcomed warmly by Winter fairies celebrating her as a hero and symbol of unity. For the first time in her life, Clarion feels accepted not as a princess but as herself. She and Milori imagine a future where the realms can remain connected despite centuries of fear and division. That hope is shattered when a massive swarm of Nightmares attacks the Winter festival. Clarion, Milori, Artemis, Petra, and the Winter fairies fight desperately to defend the Hall of Winter, but the battle quickly becomes overwhelming. Artemis is badly injured, and Petra is struck by Nightmare venom, placing her into endless magical sleep.

Seeing Petra collapse unleashes Clarion’s grief and rage. She releases an enormous burst of starlight that floods the valley with golden light, burning many of the Nightmares to ash and forcing the survivors to retreat. The power nearly kills Clarion, leaving her weak and unconscious. Milori refuses to abandon her and carries her across the border into the warm seasons so healers can save her life, despite knowing the warmth will destroy his ice wings. As he pushes through the warmth, his wings begin melting apart, permanently damaging him. Even so, he delivers Clarion safely to the healers before collapsing himself. When Clarion later awakens in the healing clinic, she learns Artemis survived while Petra remains trapped in Nightmare sleep. Elvina admits her fear of Winter led her to make terrible choices and confesses she failed Clarion by teaching her emotional isolation instead of compassion.

Realizing the Nightmares will continue returning unless their source is destroyed permanently, Clarion leaves the clinic and returns alone to the frozen lake. She discovers the magical barrier has shattered once again and dives directly into the darkness beneath the ice. Inside the Nightmare prison, Clarion is trapped in terrifying illusions showing Pixie Hollow destroyed and her friends blaming her for their suffering. The visions are designed to trap her in despair forever, but Clarion eventually realizes the illusions only hold power if she believes them. Using her starlight magic, she breaks free from the hallucinations and reaches the center of the prison, where she confronts the true source of the corruption: the Queen Nightmare, a massive dragon made of shadow, smoke, and glowing violet eyes.

Drawing strength from the wishes and hopes connected to the falling star that created her, Clarion unleashes the full power of her governing magic. Her light fills the prison and destroys the Queen Nightmare completely, ending the Nightmare threat at its source. Milori rescues Clarion from beneath the ice as the prison seals behind them forever. Across Pixie Hollow, the Nightmare curse finally breaks, awakening Petra and the other sleeping fairies. Petra reconciles with Clarion and later begins a relationship with Artemis. Elvina officially steps down and passes the crown to Clarion, admitting that fear and separation nearly destroyed Pixie Hollow.

Clarion appoints Milori as Lord of Winter, symbolizing unity between the realms and officially giving Winter representation within Pixie Hollow’s leadership. However, Milori’s wings remain permanently damaged from crossing into the warm seasons, proving the danger of crossing the borders still exists. Realizing future crossings could destroy more lives, Clarion makes the painful decision to close the border permanently despite her love for Milori. The two share a final goodbye at the bridge between Spring and Winter, promising to continue protecting their people even though they cannot remain together. Clarion is crowned queen on the bridge between the realms and begins her reign determined to rule with compassion, unity, and hope rather than the emotional distance that once defined her predecessors.
