The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Updated: Mar 12

The story takes place in Panem, a post-apocalyptic America divided into districts controlled by the Capitol. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, narrates the story from District 12, the coal-producing district. The districts are subjected to poverty and oppression, further worsened by the annual Hunger Games—a brutal competition where two children, known as "tributes," from each district must fight to the death for the Capitol's amusement. Katniss and her younger sister Prim prepare for the reaping, the ceremony where tributes are chosen. Katniss reflects on her role in her family, particularly after the death of her father in a mining accident five years ago, which left her mother emotionally distant. Katniss takes on the responsibility of providing for her family, using the hunting and survival skills her father taught her, along with the help of her friend Gale.

During the reaping, Peeta, a boy Katniss’s age, is selected alongside Prim. To protect her sister, Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place, despite knowing the grim reality of the Games. Katniss remembers her first encounter with Peeta when he gave her bread from his family's bakery to save her from starvation, an act for which he was punished. The two have barely spoken since, but Katniss is determined not to kill him in the Games, feeling indebted to him. The tributes are whisked away to the Capitol, where they meet the other tributes and are introduced to their mentor, Haymitch, and stylist, Cinna, who quickly becomes a friend to Katniss. Haymitch promises to remain sober and help them gain sponsors—important allies who can send supplies during the Games. Thanks to Cinna’s innovative styling, Katniss and Peeta gain attention in the Capitol. During their public interview, Peeta confesses to being in love with Katniss, spinning a tragic love story that captivates the audience.

The Games begin the following day, with many tributes dying in the initial scramble for supplies. Katniss, however, heads for the forest to survive on her own. She soon discovers that the Gamemakers control the arena and can alter it at will, such as lighting a forest fire to drive her away from her camp. Seeking refuge in a tree, Katniss is shocked to find Peeta among a group of tributes allied against her. She also meets Rue, a young girl from District 11 who reminds her of her sister, Prim. Rue helps Katniss escape by pointing out a dangerous nest of tracker jackers—stinging insects that cause hallucinations. Katniss uses the nest to her advantage, causing the group below to scatter and killing one of them in the process. Though she is stung several times herself, Katniss is saved by Rue, who uses medicinal plants to draw out the venom. The two form an alliance, planning to destroy the Career tributes’ food supply. When Katniss sets off an explosive trap while trying to destroy the supply, Rue is fatally attacked. Katniss tries to save her, but Rue dies in her arms. In a moment of defiance against the Capitol, Katniss buries Rue and covers her with flowers, symbolizing her rebellion.

The rules of the Games are then altered, allowing two tributes from the same district to win. Katniss realizes that she and Peeta could both survive if they work together, so she goes in search of him. After finding him injured, Katniss cares for him using medicine she risked her life to obtain. Peeta reveals that he was trying to throw off the Careers, who were hunting Katniss, and together, they pretend to be in a romance to gain more support from sponsors. As the Games near their climax, Katniss and Peeta find nightlock berries, a deadly poison, which they keep as a final means of survival. The Gamemakers force them into the arena’s center, where they confront Cato, the last remaining Career. After a tense showdown, they defeat him, only to be told that only one tribute may survive. In a final act of rebellion, Katniss and Peeta decide to eat the nightlock berries together, choosing death over continuing the Games. Just as they are about to die, they are declared the victors, both crowned champions of the Hunger Games.

Katniss and Peeta return to District 12 as winners, but their victory has consequences. Katniss’s act of defiance has made her a target of the Capitol,
