This story is dual POV
Harrow is a young seer, who has been hiding in the circus with others who have abilities, that mask hers (she pretends to be a fortune teller). Her entire clan was slaughtered, and since she was a child she has stayed hidden within the circus. Her best friend and trapeze artist (and has a tail), is Malaikah.
We also meet a demon/wraith, whose memories are gone, and he is being transported as a slave. He doesn’t talk much, his skin can change colors, and he has wings. For a month he is transported in a cage until he is finally sold to Sal/Salazar, who happens to be an elemental circus entertainer - the same one that was taken in my Harrow. Sal then names the wraith as Raith.
One evening Harrow stumbles into the cage of Raith. She takes it upon herself to take care of him - she keeps him company, sneaks food to him, and reads to him. She feels as if her power is pulled towards Raith. One night she is found out by Sal, so Sal gives her a job. She has one week to get Raith to perform for the circus, otherwise, there will be consequences.
Harrow then starts working with Malaikah to help Raith escape, and Harrow will go with him. Malaikah is a bit hesitant, as we all don’t know who Raith is, for all we know, he could be a wraith. But Malaikah trusts Harrow because she just keeps saying it’s the right thing to do. They create an elaborate plan to escape, they get Raith and Harrow out, and they go shelter in a room for a couple of days. The close space works on them immediately, and they sleep together.
Meanwhile, Sal has found out what has happened and starts interrogating Malaikah, who claims she knows nothing. Sal then proceeds to tell her that he knows quite a bit about Harrow and Raith. Harrow is a princess from her clan, a future queen. Raith is a wraith and supposedly killed Harrow’s parents. We can’t confirm this as Raith doesn’t have any of his memories.
The next day Malaikah runs back to the room with Harrow and Raith, so she can have a conversation with them. While on her way she is stopped by a man who recognizes that she belongs to the circus. He proceeds to tell her that he is looking for Raith and Harrow because the Oracle is looking for Harrow. Malaikah realizes she can’t go to Harrow that night, and returns, but also asks for the man’s name, his name is the Oroborus.
Harrow and Raith continue to live in their happy, loving, little bubble. However, one night Harrow is visited in her sleep by the Queen. She tells Harrow that Riath is the Wraith that killed her family and her tribe. The Queen has been experimenting on him, and he no longer has his memories, but it was him. She urges Harrow to run away and turn in Raith.
Raith wakes up from nightmares. Except he realizes that they are his real memories. He finds out that he was the one who killed Harrow's family. As he grapples with that news, Sal's men come in to try and take him back to the circus. He fights them off. But internally he thinks he should let them take him because it is what he deserves, and what Harrow would want.
Harrow does run, she goes to Malaikah, who is talking to the Oroborus. Oro proceeds to take both girls to the Oracle, another queen. She tells Harrow that things would be much easier with her other half. So the group goes back to the tavern and hotel where Harrow left Raith. But they don’t find him, they find Sal, and his men who have been beaten up. No one knows where Raith went.
Raith, with some of his memories, decides to go after the goddess Fury. He has all intentions of killing her, yet in a twist, Fury uses her words and power to command Raith to do anything and also turns him back into a wraith (and we learned previously that any oath Raith makes out loud he has to complete, it was why he didn’t talk to Harrow much in the beginning). Fury forces him into several oaths; that he will kill the seer, to continue to keep trying to kill the seer, that he will never disobey his vows, and once again, he is forced to vow that he will kill the seer.
Farrow and Raith run into each other, Raith fights his vows and can tell Farrow a little bit about what happened. But then the vows kick in and he starts to strangle her. Farrow, with some of her last words, says that she loves Raith, and has from the moment they met. Raith fights a bit, but then the scene blacks out.
Farrow wakes up and Malaikah tells her what happened. Raith was taken by the Oracle queen. She has promised that she will make Raith a new body so he can become human. It is a long and hard process, but Farrow is not to interrupt; this process might even take years. And he most likely won’t have any of his memories of her when he awakes.
The book cuts to 6 months later, and Harrow found Raith. He doesn’t remember her, but he does have his human body. Harrow tells Raith everything, and they fall in love again. A few weeks later Farrow finds out she is pregnant, they are both ecstatic. The epilogue is the two of them loving life together with their new baby girl.
